Eight Ways To Secure Your House

The first floor windows and doors are the most common places where attackers and criminals enter a home. The average house is nowhere near as secure as we tend to believe, and the average front door that only has a deadbolt on it can easily be kicked wide open. One of the main problems that a majority of home security measures do not consider, is that of determined attacks carried out by armed enemies. If somebody doesn’t mind making noise, then those precautions won’t do anything to keep these intruders out. For a determined attacker who has a weapon in his hand, a locked window  or door isn’t really much of a deterrent to him.

In order to make your house more secure, the first thing you should do is strengthen all of the entrances.

Attack-Proof Your House

– Replace The Hinge Screws On Your Doors. The screws that hold the front door hinges usually are only around 3/4 inch long and barely go into the wooden door frame. It doesn’t provide you with much security at all. Replace the old screws and install 3-inch case-hardened screws instead. That way the screws will be long enough so they go into the studs that are behind the door frame.

– Security Door Strikers. It is great having a deadbolt as long whatever it is installed into is strong enough so that it holds it in place. A typical door frame is made out of wood instead of metal. There isn’t any way of kicking open a door if the frame is metal. A metal striker plate is mounted only into the door frame and is small. When a door is kicked in, it is the deadbolt that actually breaks the door frame, which is the system’s weakest part. If you replace the regular striker plate, and put in a 12 inch to 60 inch long security strike plate instead, the force coming from a kick gets spread over a wider area, which makes it much more difficult to break down the door. Make sure to use 3-inch case-hardened screws when putting in the security striker.

– Door Clubs. A door club is a device that connects the door’s door Door Security Barknob side to the floor. There are a couple of drawbacks to this type of system, First of all they need to be locked manually after the door has been closed, and you also can’t open them from the outside. However, after a door club is in place, it is nearly impossible to kick a door open. In order to enter, the door would have to be broken down by the assailant.

– Replace Any Sliding Glass Doors Your Home Has. The least secure area of any house are the sliding glass doors, especially off of the patio since they tend to be hidden on the back part of the home where neighbors aren’t able to see what attackers are up to. It may be hard to pop the door off of its track; however all you need is a hammer or rock to shatter the glass. The best option is install a regular entry door to replace the sliding glass doors and then applying the security measures that were discussed above.

– Window Security Bars. Windows, just like sliding glass doors, are also quite easy to break through as long as the attacker doesn’t mind broken glass. Installing security bars is the best solution. These bars attach to a home’s siding or brick. Although they can potentially be removed by hooking a chain onto a truck, having them makes it nearly impossible for the window to be easily broken through.

– Window Security Film. You can cover the inside of your windows with security film if you would prefer not to put burglar bars on your windows. Usually a professional installer needs to install them. However, it helps to protect windows from breaking, so it is definitely worth it. In order to break the window, an intruder would need to use a hammer to pound on the window.

– Padlock Your Garage Door. Another fairly easy way to break in is through the garage door, especially if it is made of aluminum. It is easy to break out the lock, which makes it possible to manually operate the locking bars. If you place a gun lock or bike lock through the holes that are in the track right over one of the wheels, it will prevent anyone from being able to lift the door, even when they manage to remove the door lock.

– Plant Hedges. Having a 10-foot tall cement wall protecting your house might be effective, but it would be pretty obvious and make everyone wonder what you were hiding in your house in order to need that much security. However, a barrier that can be almost as effective and look nicer too would be some sort of hedge made of thorny bushes. Intruders will want to avoid trying to scale the hedge and will instead attempt to climb over the gate. Although it may not prevent them from getting in, they will at least be at the front of the door where it will be easier to confront them if necessary.

The Bottom Line

In order to defend your home properly, you need to begin to think about how an angry mob can be fought off rather than trying to prevent a cat burglar from getting in. The burglar mostly likely will do whatever he can to break in without drawing attention to himself. However, a mob of ten individuals won’t care about how much attention they attract. They will do things that cat burglars would never dream of.

So keep that in mind and work on protecting your house by making it difficult to break in, to give you some time to react. Even having a one minute warning will give you plenty of time to get your firearms out and be prepared to defend against the attackers. You will have plenty to discourage them with and it will be much more effective than merely having a locked door.
